Like so many gemstones, amethyst has an interesting history and exciting modern applications.

This stone was once as expensive as rubies. But since a large deposit has been found in Brazil, it has become one of the most affordable fine gems available today.

Amethystos actually means ‘not drunk’ in Greek. The gem was named after this because in the ancient times, it was originally perceived that amethyst could prevent intoxication.

Today, we know better that a stone cannot have that kind of impact. But in some cultures, this stone is said to provide a connection to the divine.

Also, some of the famous jewellery pieces of the world include amethyst.

One such example is Queen Silvia of Sweden’s tiara, originally owned by French Empress Josephine. 

Another notable piece is an amethyst necklace from Egypt which dates as far back as 3100 B.C.

What makes it interesting is that the centre stone has an ancient inscription on it. It is believed that many pharaohs loved amethyst and used them as adornment.

The Morris Amethyst Brooch is another popular jewellery piece. It features a 96-carat amethyst with a deep purple colour which has been set in a brooch.

There is some mystery as to when it was made, but all indications point to the Edwardian period. This precious artefact currently resides at the Smithsonian Museum.
