Birthstone Showcase- Amethyst

Birthstone Showcase- Amethyst

Like so many gemstones, amethyst has an interesting history and exciting modern applications.

This stone was once as expensive as rubies. But since a large deposit has been found in Brazil, it has become one of the most affordable fine gems available today.

Amethystos actually means ‘not drunk’ in Greek. The gem was named after this because in the ancient times, it was originally perceived that amethyst could prevent intoxication.

Today, we know better that a stone cannot have that kind of impact. But in some cultures, this stone is said to provide a connection to the divine.

Also, some of the famous jewellery pieces of the world include amethyst.

One such example is Queen Silvia of Sweden’s tiara, originally owned by French Empress Josephine.

Another notable piece is an amethyst necklace from Egypt which dates as far back as 3100 B.C.

What makes it interesting is that the centre stone has an ancient inscription on it. It is believed that many pharaohs loved amethyst and used them as adornment.

The Morris Amethyst Brooch is another popular jewellery piece. It features a 96-carat amethyst with a deep purple colour which has been set in a brooch.

There is some mystery as to when it was made, but all indications point to the Edwardian period. This precious artefact currently resides at the Smithsonian Museum.

Amethyst Jewellery

Being the most valued gem from the quartz variety, amethyst has its moments when it is in high demand for designer jewellery pieces. Its purple hue is most alluring and desired by many.

It is a hard gem with a rating of 7 on the hardness scale, making it suitable for jewellery use.

The gem can be found in huge conglomerations – some as big as 75 kilos. It can also be found in combination with other minerals.

Because of its unique appeal, many jewellers utilise this beautiful stone. It is best paired with white gold to further emphasise its striking purple shade.

White diamonds also complement this gem very well.

You will be hard-pressed to obtain a purple piece of jewellery with as much vibrancy and beauty as an amethyst piece.

The halo setting suits the amethyst extremely well as seen in our Purple Delight Diamond Ring and our Amethyst Diamond Halo Necklace.

Amethyst can be shaped into any available cut, but typically suits the classic round or oval. We do offer pear shaped amethyst drop earrings as a twist to the classic style, where the purple colour can range from light to dark, with some looking slightly pastel.

If you are after a unique diamond engagement ring, perhaps with a purple centre or side stones, then we can craft you the perfect amethyst ring.
