Engagement Ring Buying Guide for Men

So you’ve found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with and are now on the hunt for an engagement ring that will make them squeal “YES”. At Armans Fine Jewellery we create bespoke, custom engagement rings that are as unique as your bond with your special partner.

No matter what, your partner will be excited when you get down on one knee and promise yourself to them forever… but let’s help them say yes by giving them the engagement ring of their dreams.

1.   SET A BUDGET

Although we believe that a ring’s worth is not dictated by the cost, but the meaning behind it, money does play a big role in choosing your partner’s engagement ring. There is no golden rule on how much you should spend on an engagement ring, but you should spend what you’re comfortable with. Once we know your budget, we can assist you in selecting the centre gemstone. Whether you would like a diamond or other budget-friendly gemstones, you’ll find the perfect ring at Armans.

2.   LEARN ABOUT THE 4 C’S

Did you know that diamonds are graded according to four Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat? Finding the perfect balance between these elements will allow you to find the best diamond for your engagement ring.

CUT

The cut of a diamond refers not to its shape but to the balance of symmetry and proportion achieved by the diamond cutter. The better a diamond has been cut, the greater the diamond’s ability to reflect and refract light.

COLOUR

A diamond’s colour is dependent on the elements of nitrogen that were present when the diamond formed under the Earth’s crust. The full color scale ranges from D through Z, with D grade diamonds appearing icy white and Z diamonds featuring a pale yellow hue. The most valuable diamonds are those with less colour and greater brilliance.

CLARITY

The clarity of a diamond considers size, colour and orientation and is dependent on the presence of natural blemishes within a diamond. Diamonds with no or few inclusions are considered rare and highly valued.

CARAT

Carat is a way of measuring the overall weight of the diamond.

3.   CHOOSE A GEMSTONE OR DIAMOND

The most timeless, classic engagement ring style features a center diamond, but there are other unique options available. These include sapphires, rubies, emeralds and many more. Although you probably think of sapphires as being a deep blue, they also come in yellow, pink, white, and a variety of other colors.

The most popular gemstone choice other than a diamond of 2021 so far is a blue sapphire. See some of our best sellers below:

4.   CHOOSE A RING STYLE

Choosing a ring style may be the toughest decision when choosing the perfect engagement ring for your partner. To help you select the style that would best suit your partner’s hand, we have created a guide here.

5.   SELECT A SHAPE

Diamonds come in a variety of shapes, the most popular include Round, Oval, Radiant, Pear, Cushion, Emerald, Marquise and Princess. A round diamond shape is the most popular by far and also the most expensive. However this year there has been an increasing popularity in the Oval shape due to a number of celebrities opting for oval cut engagement rings.

6.   CHOOSE A PRECIOUS METAL

Of course the diamond of an engagement ring is the icing on the wedding cake, but the base is just as important and can say a lot about your fiancé 's style. At Armans Fine Jewellery, you can choose from platinum, yellow gold, white gold or rose gold.

  1. PLATINUM: Platinum is 30 times more rare than gold and 40% heavier than 9k gold. It’s a popular choice for engagement rings and wedding bands, and is considered the most precious of all jewels.
  2. YELLOW GOLD: Gold has always been a timeless standard for engagement and wedding jewellery. Classic yet fashionable,
  3. WHITE GOLD: More contemporary than yellow gold, white gold gets its silvery white character from combining yellow gold with copper, zinc and nickel.
  4. ROSE GOLD: Romantic and unique, rose gold is a good choice if your partner tends to gravitate toward warmer tones.

7.   DETERMINE YOUR PARTNER’S RING SIZE

There’s nothing worse than planning the perfect proposal, only for the ring to not fit your fiance’s finger. So we have come up with some stealthy strategies to size up their finger on the sly.

  1. Borrow a ring from their jewellery box
  2. Check for sizing stamps inside their existing rings e.g brands like Pandora stamp the ring number inside the ring
  3. Reach out to some of your partner’s friends who won’t spill the surprise
  4. Take a photo of their ring next to a ruler or use a fine pen to trace around the inside of the ring on a piece of paper
