How to Choose the Best Engagement Ring Style to Suit Your Hand

How to Choose the Best Engagement Ring Style to Suit Your Hand

Whether you’re ready to promise forever with the love of your life or you couldn’t be any more single if you tried, we’ve all dreamt about our ideal proposal and the ring we would say “YES” to.  But is your ‘dream’ ring the ‘right’ ring?

Different ring styles flatter different hand types. To steer you in the right direction, we’ve created a style guide to help you find your perfect engagement ring based on your unique hand shape.

STEP ONE: SELECT YOUR HAND SHAPE

When searching for your dream engagement ring, you must consider the width and length of your fingers and hands, as well as the width and style of the ring itself. So let’s determine your hand shape:

  1. LONG AND SKINNY
  2. LONG AND WIDE
  3. SHORT AND WIDE
  4. PETITE

STEP TWO: FIND YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING STYLE

  1. LONG AND SKINNY

For those lucky hand models with long, skinny hands, most styles will work nicely on you. However, in order to best complement your length and create the illusion of width, we recommend choosing a thicker band, such as an elegant diamond band. Compliment the band with a slender diamond, like an oval or pear shape, to make thin fingers appear wider.

  1. LONG AND WIDE

For those with long, wide hands, you have the luxury of experimenting with dramatic, bold designs and stones. A more attention-grabbing design, such as a 3 stone trilogy, will draw attention to the diamond and divert from the length and width of your hand.

  1. SHORT AND WIDE

If you have short and wide hands, the intention is to generally draw attention away from the skin on the sides of the stone. We recommend a Halo or cluster style to create the illusion of slimmer fingers and draw attention to the centre diamond. Avoid narrow stones as they will further exaggerate width and consider drawing attention to the brilliance of a Radiant or Emerald style instead.

  1. PETITE

Believe it or not, bigger isn’t always better - especially not for those with small hands. To elongate short fingers, a solitaire style with a longer diamond shape such as a marquise, pear or oval will create the illusion of length. Petite hands pair beautifully with fine jewellery and this classy, delicate style will be the most flattering for smaller fingers.
